Pictured above is Grant Golliher, the owner of Diamond Cross. Taking pictures of Grant as well as the other cowboys on the ranch really made me feel like I was living in the wild west. To me, Grant seemed to represent the wild west more than anyone or anything I had ever experienced. He is a hard working family man, leader, cowboy and much more. He is a rugged outdoorsman and at the same time a quiet and humble servant leader.
Meeting the Diamond Cross family led by Grant was an extraordinary experience that I can’t quite put into words. Their unique lifestyle represents everything I ever desired as a kid and they happen to be some of the kindest people I’ve ever met.
More Cowboys on the ranch!
Other cowboys that I photographed included Luke (Grant’s son), Bonner Bolton and Dalton Kaser. I had so much fun taking pictures of these cowboys and their lifestyle. The magnificent mountain range made a perfect backdrop for all my creative visions. We were up early every morning before the sun came up. Being June in the Tetons it was still very chilly in the mornings believe it or not.
The majority of my time here was spent running around the mud and grass, chasing these guys and their horses. This was no easy endeavor, as the cowboys and horses move swiftly but I had fun every moment. Did anyone else spend most of their childhood dreaming about being a cowboy? Myself and my brothers would run around the back woods pretending to shoot at each other and dreaming of a life on the western range. This short lived trip is the closest I have ever experienced to my childhood vision.
Working to find compositions in the rain.
I took many pictures during my stay at Diamond Cross. Though my entire experience was astounding, the clouds and rain were covering the mountains for the majority of my stay. This presented me with difficulty in finding the compositions that I had envisioned. This image however ended up being one of my favorites. For a while I found myself stubborn, every second growing anxious that I couldn’t see the mountains. Finally, I began to work with what I had- beautiful moody clouds as well as talented cowboys and their horses. Though I would have loved to have seen the mountains more often, these memories of cowboys and horses living their wild lifestyle won’t soon be forgotten.
